*SECOND PLACE FOR BEST VIDEO BY THE MISSOURI PRESS ASSOCIATION* At the close of 2018, a curious photo editor wanted to know where the Columbia Missourian had been sending photographers and videographers throughout the year. She generated a map from her research and found there were neighborhoods in Columbia where staff was seldom sent. We wanted to correct ourselves. Since January 2019, visual journalists have been sent to these areas to get to know locals and amplify their voices. These are a few of many stories. In this installment of Student Stories, we meet Amy Callirgos Céspedes, a Cellular and Molecular Biology major, international student, and President’s Ambassador. A native of Lima, Peru, Callirgos Céspedes explains how she has benefitted from Lindenwood’s emphasis on experiential learning, particularly within her Cellular and Molecular Biology program. She feels passionate about her goals of becoming a doctor, serving people internationally, and eventually joining Doctors Without Borders. “There’s no way I would be the person I am today if I would have stayed at home,” she said. 🚊 On Feb. 3, 2023, a chain of events sparked a public health crisis EPA tried to conceal, to the benefit of railway giant Norflolk Southern. After the East Palestine, OH train derailment, Norflolk Southern conducted an open burn of train cars in violation of EPA regulation, releasing toxic chemicals. Cancer clusters are already emerging in the community. Since our investigation began, we’ve publicized independent chemical testing results, submitted a petition for EPA to warn locals of health risks, revealed cover-up attempts, sued FEMA and DHS, and demanded accountability from EPA. As of February 2026, our petition to EPA remains unanswered. The agency has yet to warn residents about the presence of harmful contaminants, and locals are still waiting for justice. ⚖️ Erez Reuveni, a 15-year Department of Justice (DOJ) attorney with a distinguished bipartisan record, is blowing the whistle on the DOJ. His whistleblower disclosure, submitted to Congress with Government Accountability Project, revealed a troubling pattern of DOJ defiance of court orders and retaliation.
